Happy 5 Months, Dylan!!

All I have to say is "wow...where does the time go??" I can hardly believe I am the proud mama of a 5 month-old infant (he is not even a newborn anymore)! I apologize for not posting anything in the past 4 months but time is not something I have a lot of these days. I spend as much free time as possible with Dylan so blogging has not been a priority but I am going to try and keep up a bit more. It was alot easier to blog when I was on bedrest with nothing to do!!

Dylan reached a major milestone on the eve of his 5 month birthday - he slept in his crib - in his room - all night - without waking up - while mommy and daddy slept upstairs!! I thought for sure I would be making several trips downstairs. Nope! Not one! I have to admit...I am very proud of him. He has also been teething like crazy. When we went to the doctor's last week the nurse said he might even cut a tooth by Christmas. He is drooling and putting everything in his mouth. He also loves to sit (still supported). He sits on the sofa and plays with his toys and look at Jeff and I. It's like he thinks he is on our level now...so cute.

My little baby is gowing up....fast! I have vowed to enjoy every moment we have together because in the blink of an eye he will be off to kindergarten, then driving, the prom and college. For now, I will enjoy every minute of feeding him mangos and teaching him to drink from a sippy cup.

Happy 1 Month Birthday, Dylan!

I am in shock that Dylan is already one month old today! It just does not seem possible that a month has passed since I was pregnant with him. In one short month he had changed and grown so much. He now has a pudgy little belly and his face has really filled out. He has truly enhanced our lives and we cannot remember exactly what our lives were like without him!

Big Boy!!

Last night Jeff and I took Dylan to the pediatrician for his 3 week appointment. We were really happy with the pediatrician we chose and were thrilled to learn that Dylan now weights 7 lbs. and 6 oz. up from his birth weight of 5 lbs. and 15 oz. The pediatrician said he looks wonder and is growing well! He is still low in his percentiles due to the fact he was born early but they said he will catch-up in no time.

Time Flies When You Have A Baby!!!

It is so hard to believe that Dylan has been with us for 2 and 1/2 weeks now!! So, much has happened in those few short weeks. Dylan is a very good baby but he gives us a run for our money at night. He sleeps about 2 and 1/2 hours at a time so we are up at least twice in the middle of the night to feed him. We are slowly adjusting to the lack of sleep but it is certainly worth it!

We have had lots of company this past week! Grandma Janet came to visit for almost the whole week and even took care of Dylan one night so Jeff and I could sleep through the night. Of course, I was up checking in with them but I was still able to catch up on my sleep. Also, Grandpa Scott, Great Grandma Thurston, Great Aunt Colleen, Great Grandpa Jackson and Linda came to visit this week! Dylan seemed to enjoy being held by everyone and being the center of attention.

Dylan lost his umbilical cord stump this past week and had his very first bath with Mommy and Daddy! He actually only cried a little bit and seemed like he might like bath time!! Here are a few photos from the event!

Happy 1 Week, Dylan!!

It is so hard to believe that it has already been a week since Dylan was born!! He went to see his pediatrician today and he is doing great! He now weighs 5lbs and 15.5oz. So, he is back up to his birth weight! The doctor said this was great because sometimes it can take up to two weeks for that to happen and it only took him one. Jeff and I are adjusting to our new lives as parents - it is amazing how quickly things change!
Happy 1 Week Birthday, Dylan!!

He is here....Welcome Dylan Scott Sanders!!!!

Wow! I have been meaning to update the blog since Dylan was born but the last 5 days have been a whirlwind! We are just smitten with our little man and learning what it means to be parents!! Here is the birth story about how Dylan arrived and made our family complete!!

On Tuesday, July 20 we headed to the hospital at 6:00PM for the labor induction. We settled in and I was given Cervidil to begin the labor process. That evening and overnight went great with just a little cramping - it was the waiting that made it seem to drag. We watched TV and just waited in anticipation for something to happen.

Then first thing Wednesday morning my nurse came in to wake me up to shower so they could start the Pitocin to induce labor. Due to my high blood pressure I also had to be on an IV of magnesium to prevent seizures and keep things in check. So, the Pitocin drip started at 7:00AM and throughout the morning I started having contractions but nothing too major. The magnesium made me feel horrible - very lightheaded and hot!! Then around 3:00PM Jeff and I decided to take a nap so I could get a little rest before the delivery. After about 45 minutes of napping my contractions came on very, very strong and I was in a lot of pain. My doctor came to check me and I was only 1 cm dilated. I was very discouraged but since I was having lots of pain they did give me the epidural. They did not want me to be in pain and have that also increase my blood pressure.

The epidural was awesome! Everything that everyone has ever said about how wonderful they are is true! I was no longer in pain and could enjoy the labor and pending arrival of my little boy. My mom and dad visited that afternoon and evening as well as my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. At 7:00PM my doctor came to check me and I was 3 cm dilated. It was a slow process! She then decided to break my water to try and speed things up a bit. My parent's were trying to figure out what to do since it was looking like the baby would be delivered during the night. They ended up staying at a hotel down the road to make things easier so they could get to the hospital for the delivery.

We were all visiting in the labor and delivery room when my sister-in-law and I started to notice that Dylan's heat rate was going down on the external fetal monitor. I started to get a little nervous at that point. My nurse and a few others came in and cleared the room so they could figure out what was going on. They decided to attach a small monitor to the baby's head so they could be sure they were getting the correct heart rate. They also decided to insert an internal contraction monitor as well. They called in the OBGYN on duty to get the procedure done immediately due to the seriousness of the issue. My doctor arrived shortly after and by tracking the internal monitors quickly discovered that with every contraction Dylan's heart rate was dropping and that he was in distress.

She then told me we would have to do a C-section immediately because that would be the safest option for the me and the baby. I was scared and upset but knew I had no choice - off we went to the operating room for the section. Honestly, everything happened so fast a lot of it is a blur. I remember not feeling my body at all and feeling just like a head floating around. I do however remember one of the doctor's talking about how their was a severe thunderstorm directly over head!! If you know me well, you know I am petrified of thunderstorms!! But, at that point I really did not care. During a thunderstorm, over the sheet in the operating room we were able to get our first glimpse of our little Dylan. Jeff and I we were immediately overrun with emotion and just in love. He was so perfect!

Daddy stayed with Dylan while they finished my surgery and I went to recovery. Then both of them came to meet me in recovery so I could see my little boy! I was shaking like crazy from the spinal epidural, had dry mouth and was feeling pretty horrible. But, it did not seem to matter because I was able to be with Jeff and Dylan.

That night I was hooked back up to the magnesium for my high blood pressure and had to stay on it for 24 hours following the surgery. During that time I could not eat and the magnesium continued to make me feel awful. Finally, Thursday evening they moved us from the labor and delivery floor to the regular recovery floor. I was taken off my IV's and able to walk for the first time since Wednesday afternoon. We stayed at the hospital until Saturday afternoon. Jeff stayed with Dylan and I each night which really meant a lot to me. During that time we had many family and friends come by the hospital to visit.
While the delivery was not what I had planned for or hoped for in the end it did not matter. We were blessed with a healthy beautiful baby boy and that is all that matters!!

Yummy Dinner!!!

Well, Tony and Meghan must have had intuition that the baby was going come sooner rather than later! They called today and said they were bringing over dinner which could not have been more perfect since Jeff worked late and I spent the afternoon scrambling to get everything done. They brought a super yummy balsamic chicken salad, roasted corn and onion pasta salad and blueberry cobbler. It was perfect and hit the spot. Thank you, Tony and Meghan!!! Yumm!

INDUCTION Set....for TOMORROW!

At todays doctor's appointment my blood pressure was running higher than it had been 142/90. So, my OBGYN decided that tomorrow she will start the induction! YIKES! I mean I knew I would have him soon - but this is soon! I have to report to the hospital at 6:00pm tomorrow evening to start the first part of the induction. Then they start the pitocin on Wednesday morning. Our little guy should be here either Wednesday or Thursday!! We are excited, nervous, happy and anxious all rolled into one! Wish us luck!

37 Weeks!!

Here is my week 37 picture!!!

Just Waiting...

I know I have been a bit of a slacker the past few days when it comes to updating the blog. We have been busy the past few days since now we know our little dillybean is going to be here no later than the end of the week....YAY! I am starting to get really uncomfortable these days and I just cannot wait to meet our baby boy.

Let's see....so this weekend we did some swimming at Jeff's parents pool. The hope was that walking laps around the pool would maybe get labor started but no such luck. The pool felt great though on my back and helped with the swelling in my legs!

We attended Jeff's company's annual picnic - a Hawaiian themed pig roast! It was delicious! We had a great time with all of his colleagues but it was hot!! And let me tell you heat + pregnant woman = mess! But, I hung in there and we really enjoyed ourselves and the yummy food and company!

We also had a super yummy breakfast at Uncle Marty's with our adorable godson, Liam (and his parents Andrew and Star)! It has been so fun watching him grow up! Every time we see him he gets bigger and bigger and makes us laugh. It will be so fun to watch Liam and our little guy grow up together!

So, those are the highlights from the weekend! I am now just patiently waiting for this afternoon's doctor's appointment so we have a better idea of where we are and when things will happen!!

Stay tuned for a post later today!!

More Progress!

I did not get to actually see my doctor today because she was called out of the office to do an emergency C-section. So, our little guy did great during his biophysical ultrasound earning all 8 of his points. They then tracked his heart rate and my contractions for a while. Baby Sanders looked great! I had some contractions but nothing strong enough to get excited about. The results of one of my most recent tests now has me diagnosed with actual preclampsia now. So, my doctor will induce me the end of next week. She is planning to discuss this with me at my visit on Monday. So, it looks like at the very latest Baby Sanders will be making his appearance the end of next week....unless he decides to surprise us in the meantime!!!

Quick Update!!

My doctor's appointment went well today! After my visit on Thursday I was a little disappointed because our little guy was out of position and seemed to be a bit tangled in his umbilical cord. Well, today he was much lower in my pelvis - so low that when the OBGYN did an internal exam she could feel his head. I am a scant one fingertip dilated but I am very happy with that....considering the fact that on Thursday my cervix was still long and there was no sign of dilation. My blood pressure was good for me - 128/80. They did all of my blood work today to see where we are with the preeclampsia and I will get those results Thursday.

I do have to admit that I did eat PINEAPPLE for breakfast Sunday am! According to old wives tales pineapple is said to ripen the cervix. Who knows if it is true but it seemed to work at least a little bit for me!

A BIG Surprise for Jeff!!

Today the Accent Furniture family threw Jeff a surprise baby shower! I was in on the surprise and snuck out of the house so I could attend. It was so nice and they even gave Jeff a medallion to wear that said "Dad-to-be." He was so proud to wear it and is planning to wear it to the hospital when I am in labor. We received a ton of wonderful gifts and I can now say we are officially all set for our little guy's arrival. Here are a few pics from the shower:

Always Something....

Today at my doctor's appointment my blood pressure was nice and stable. Our little guy did great during his biophysical profile today - he easily scored his 8 points and was moving around like his normal self. Most importantly he had a huge growth spurt! They think he is now about 5 pounds and 12 oz!! I was thrilled about this since he was lagging behind a bit at the last appointment! The only downfall is that he has moved again. Last week he was engaged in my pelvis, head down and ready to go. But, today he is head down but he has alot of the umbilicial wrapped around his neck and/or arms and it is not allowing him to "engage" any more. He is "floating" a bit above my pelvis. If he stays that way they would not be able to induce me. My OBGYN said not to worry - that this will not affect him in the womb and that alot can change. But, not worrying is easier said than done. Especially when you spend everyday just sitting on the sofa waiting for the little guy to arrive.

Pregnancy + Heat Wave = YUCK!!

So, we are in our first official heat wave of the summer. I know I really cannot complain since we do have central a/c downstairs and a unit in our bedroom. But, when it is this hot and humid both a/c units do not work that great - especially since our master bedroom is a converted attic. It was hot in our bedroom last night. The heat made it so much harder to get comfortable. I cannot wait until this heat wave is over and I hope the baby comes before the next heat wave!

36 Weeks and Doctor's Appointment Update

I am now in my 36th week of pregnancy...unbelievable. Below are a few pictures of me...I cannot believe I am still getting bigger!

36 glorious weeks!

Add Image
I also had a doctor's appointment today. Jeff was able to come with me since he was off of work today because of the 4th of July holiday. It was so nice having him be able to come. At first my blood pressure was high but they took it again at the end of the appointment and it was just fine. They have decided going forward they will now take my blood pressure toward the end of my visits. The NST went great - our little guy was moving around like crazy and I even had a few Braxton Hicks contractions show up on the monitor. So, things were stable today and we will see where we are on Thursday when I go back to the doctor's.

To celebrate the great visit, Jeff treated me to lunch at Shanghai Grill (so yummy!) and then we spent the afternoon floating around his parent's pool! It feels so good to be in the pool. My back and body is so achy and the weightlessness of the water is just wonderful. I am now back to the sofa relaxing with my feet up! Thank goodness for central air conditioning - I hope I survive the heat wave!

A Family Filled 4th of July

We enjoyed a wonderful 4th of July holiday! My mom and dad came to visit and brought lots of yummy food for us to enjoy together! Jeff "manned" the grill and made some delicious BBQ and spiedie marinated pork sirloin! It was a great day of just relaxing around the house and spending time with family! Here are some pictures from the day!

Good Food, Excellent Company!!

Last night Andrew, Star and Liam brought us over a delicious dinner from Deli and Brew!! We dined on delicious subs and we able to catch up! Liam is getting to be such a big boy. He was all smiles keeping us entertained the entire evening. I found out I was pregnant with our little guy 3 days after Liam was born and I remember thinking to myself...."wow, when Liam is just about 8 months old we will be having our baby." So, seeing Liam so big, crawling all over the place at the ripe old age of 7 months is a bit surreal! Our little guy is going to be here so soon! I am not quite ready yet, though. I know the doctor told me to be ready since he could come early but I really think I need at least another week or maybe two to really be ready. Jeff says I will never feel ready and I am sure he is right. There are just so many emotions that go into labor and birth - from worry, excitement, anxiousness, happiness, etc. I am so excited for the big day but worry at the same time...I hope that is normal!

Back from the Doctor's...

Today our little guy was very stubborn during his biophysical profile ultrasound. During the "test" he gets points for certain things - like large movements, practicing his breathing, blood flow in umbilical cord, fluids, etc. Well, he decided to sleep and did not want to wake up for the ultrasound tech today! So, it was a little stressful since he was not getting his points. But, finally after lots of poking and proding he woke up and "passed" the profile test!

I did find out that my gestational hypertension has now progressed to mild preeclampsia, which we had been fearing. Also, the baby is small for 35 weeks and is in the 22% precentile. The doctor thinks that is due to the medical issues I have been having. He is head down and in position for delivery. The doctor said that sometimes babies with moms with preeclampsia tend to be premature so to be prepared. Babies born at 35 weeks tend to only need a few days in the neonatal unit and have developed lungs so that is giving us some piece of mind. Since the medication is still keeping my blood pressure lowered we are ok for now. If anything changes over the weekend I have to call the doctor and I have a visit scheduled for Monday.

So, right now I am just trying not to worry. I am resting and relaxing as much as possible to keep this little guy happy and healthy in the womb. I am hoping we can keep him cookin for a few more weeks!!

Work Baby Shower!!

After all of the drama of Monday, Jeff and I were able to have some fun on Tuesday by attending a baby shower thrown by my wonderful colleagues at Siena College! It was so nice being able to see everyone after being on bedrest for almost a full month now!! They had a wonderfully delicious lunch for us, cake and gifts for the baby. The also made us a baseball themed parenting scrapbook. Everyone contributed by adding a quote and/or recipe. It is such a unique gift and so meaningful! We could not have asked for a better day!

The very delicious cake!

Looking at the scrapbook.

Another Unexpected Twist!

Well, today did not go exactly as planned. I started the day by visiting a potential daycare provider and that ended up being a nightmare! It was a center and it was horrible. My first thought was you could not pay ME enough to leave my child here! It was filthy, the entire place smelled of urine and it was completely disorganized!

So, after that I came home to relax before my noon doctor's appointment. I had some lunch and then off I went. Well, first things first I had gained 7 pounds since Thursday - yes, in 3 days! Very quick weight gain can be a sign of preeclampsia so both nurses we right by my side from the beginning. Then they took my blood pressure and it was too high considering I am on medication - 151/89. Then during the NST our little guy really did not move too much - he was very lethargic. The nurses had me eat a Twizzler and then he moved a little bit more but his heart rate was a bit lower than usual. The monitor was also picking up some mild contractions. After an ultrasound, to be on the safe side my doctor sent me to labor and delivery to be monitored at Bellevue Women's Hospital to get a better idea of what was going on.

I spent the rest of the day at the hospital so they could closely track my blood pressure and the baby. I also had to have more bloodwork done! Throughout the afternoon my blood pressure did go down and the baby became much more active. His heart rate was back to the norm for him - around 140's. Jeff came to keep me company and raise my spirits!! That certainly helped and made me feel so much better! At the end of the day my doctor came to the hospital and discharged me since everything stablized by this evening. We are going to have to up my medication a bit more to keep things in check a bit longer. Obviously, I am still on bed rest and taking it easy. I go back to the doctor's on Thursday.

On the positive side of things, I had the opportunity to meet some of the nurses at Bellevue who may be there when I actually deliver. Everyone was so nice and friendly. I am very happy with the hospital we chose. I am considering this a bit of a trial run for the big day!!

A Very Nice Day!!

  • So, I am in my 4th official week of bedrest and it really seems to be helping our little guy a lot! It makes me feel good to know just how worth it this all is and to feel him move around and be nice and healthy!
  • Yesterday was a super fun day! Some of my favorite Siena gals stopped over to bring me lunch and visit! Mary Beth, Karen and Janice brought pizza and chocolate chip cookies (my favorites)! We chatted and I was able to show-off the nursery. Having some company really makes all the difference in making the day go by faster! It was such a treat getting to see them!
  • Then last night we went to our 3rd (of 4) birthing classes at Bellevue Women's Center in Niskayuna, NY. This is where we will be having our little guy. We toured the facilities and that made the whole labor and birth experience seem so much more real. My heart started to beat really fast and I got a little sweaty when we toured the birthing suite. Reality is starting to set in that I am actually going to have to go through labor to meet our son. I have known this all along but before it seemed so far away and nowit really could be anytime. Thank goodness, they have been teaching us cleansing breaths in class!
  • We visited the nursery and we able to see some of the babies there. All those cute little faces peeping out at us. I could tell this part really made Jeff excited, to think that in a few weeks our baby boy will be the one in there peeping out at us!

Looking up!

Today's OBGYN visit could not have went any better! All of the new test results came back stable which means that so far the gestational hypertension I was diagnosed with has not progressed anymore towards preclampsia. I am still on modified bedrest because that seems to be helping as well as the high blood pressure medication. My doctor keeps telling me to enjoy this time because once the baby is here I will wish I had it! The baby passed his NST test with flying colors. He was quite active today and was kicking the fetal monitor so hard you could easily see it from the outside moving.

More Visitors!

  • Jeff has been away this weekend to attend the Phish shows in Saratoga so I have been on my own! Yesterday, I spent the day resting on the deck by the pool at my in-laws house. It was such a beautiful day and not too hot...I think I really needed the fresh air. I spent about 30 minutes in the pool which felt really nice my more sore back and joints.

  • Then after my brother-in-law, Andy, and my mother-in-law, Kathy, made us a delicious steak dinner I headed back home for the evening. My niece, Allison, came to stay overnight and "take care of me." My close friend, Star, and my adorable godson, Liam, also came over to visit and they brought me my absolute favorite, Fudge Fancy cookies!!! Deliciousness! We spent the evening chatting and relaxing.

  • I said it before and I will say it again...having visitors really makes all the difference! They days go by quicker and I don't feel like I am all alone! Poor Jeff comes home from work each time and I bombard him and talk his ear off because after sitting alone the whole day things can get pretty dull.

  • The baby has been moving around like crazy in my belly and seems to be doing quite well. I will know more once I get my tests results tomorrow at my doctor's appointment! Fingers crossed!

An Unexpected Surprise!

Well, this week certainly ended with a bang....a big bang on my front door! I was resting on the sofa and was startled by a loud knock on the front door. To my surprise, it was a delivery from Edible Arrangements from one of my best friends, Jessica! It was so adorable and such a treat...almost to cute to eat (but, trust me....I will be eating it)! Thanks, Jess!

So, Thankful for Visitors!!

  • Over the past two days I have had a few visitors that have really made the days go by much faster. Last night, my colleague, Ruth brought over a fully cooked meal for Jeff and I compliments of Siena College (my employer)! We feasted on Chicken Parm, Lasanga Rolls, Fruit Salad, Poppyseed Rolls and Italian Cookies! It was absolutely delicious and it was nice for Jeff and I to share a meal neither of us had to cook....he really enjoyed the night off!

Below are a few pics of our delicious fest!

Chicken Parm

Lasanga Rolls

Poppyseed Rolls, Bella Napoli Italian Cookies & Fruit Salad (YUMMY!)

  • Then today I had two visitors stop by with goodies for the baby. My friend, Kelly, who I worked with at RPI came over for lunch and then my colleague Sue, from Siena, came over later in the afternoon to visit. I have to admit....company really, really breaks up the day!!

A Minor Setback

I went to the OBGYN yesterday for what has become my twice a week venture out of the house! The baby looks wonderful - he once again passed his biophysical profile test and is about a whopping 4 lbs and 7 oz! I, on the other hand, did not do quite as well as the baby. My blood pressure was up from the week before so the OB decided to increase my blood pressure medicine to 3 times a day. She also drew a whole lot of blood and ran a few other tests to see if things are still stable or moving more towards preclampsia. So, on Monday we will have the results of the tests and will know more. In the meantime, I am resting like a good patient!

33 Weeks Pregnant!

Another week down.....33 weeks pregnant!

  • At my doctor's appointment this past Monday the baby looked great and passed his NST with flying colors. The medication is helping to lower my blood pressure which is exactly what we had hoped!

A Showery Shower Day

  • Yesterday my wonderful sister-in-law and mother-in-law threw me a baby shower at my sister-in-laws house in Troy! It ended up being quite a rainy day but that did not effect the day in the least! It was so great see friends and family I have not seen in a while to celebrate the impending arrival of our little guy!
  • After two showers all I can think is that we are truly blessed and lucky to have such amazing friends and family. Our baby is certainly going to have everything he will ever need and then some! We have just been blown away by everyone's kindness!
  • Here are a few pictures from the special day!
